Competing concerns about inclusion, diversity, the economy, national security and the rule of law make for a contentious debate. As this weeks readings demonstrate, these debates are nothing new. For this discussion, consider your own views about immigration and your experiences with diverse people. Consider your own family history. What are your thoughts about the current debates and about immigration to the US? What does the assigned article reveal to you about the role of presidential leadership in discussing issues of immigration? How do current debates reflect the earlier ones we learned about in the text chapter? What do they tell us about how we define American citizenship? How are these debates different form the ones in the past (or are they)? Why do you think this is the case? How can the past inform the present when it comes to conversations about immigration and immigrants?
