if you are taking this class as MGMT 4620, as a fourth-year undergraduate course – 2000 words (approx. 8 pages double-spaced)
format: MS Word and PDF or html & css
assignment
This assignment is an opportunity for you to investigate a topic of interest to you and relevant to the course. The choice and development of a specific topic is part of the assignment’s challenge. Starting from one of the course readings could be a good strategy.
If you are interested in more technical or design issues, you could begin from one of the issues raised in the more technical or hands-on aspects of the course – for example, issues related to specific challenges of CSS for responsive design or of designing or developing specific types of web sites or of deploying tools to monitor website use and users.
Digital Humanities, is also a starting point you might wish to investigate, even although we will be talking about this in more detail later in the term. However, you could investigate areas relevant to DH from a perspective relating to project challenges or from an archives or library perspective.
It is a good idea to think about this project as early as possible, although this is always a challenge.
Remember that the best types of reports or research essays begin by identifying a problem or a question. For example,
What is the best strategy for designing a website to be displayed on both larger screens and on mobile devices?
What do we know about how people read differently on the screen than they do on paper, and how is this important to designing effective digital documents or websites?
What features could be added to digital documents – e.g. digital copies of academic articles from library databases – to increase their usefulness and use?
What challenges do libraries or archives have in creating, preserving, or making available digital copies of documents?
What types of digital documents or collections of digital documents are best for long-term preservation? What are the trade-offs that one must make between designing for style and designing for long-term preservation? Look at the work of the Endings project – https://endings.uvic.ca/ – for ideas or starting points.
These are just some ideas. The best topic will be one of interest to you…
Once you have an idea, do some research to find relevant reputable sources. For some technical topics, the best sources will be found on the web and not in journal databases. For other topics, there is a wealth of academic resources available through the library website or through Google Scholar.
When you have an idea for your topic, you can check with me before you begin writing. Talk to me during office hours or send me a brief email. I would be happy to discuss your topic area with you.
The paper will be submitted as a MS Word and PDF document or in html & css documents.
