“Many People assume that whether or not they become ill or remain healthy is the luck of the draw.
Consider the phrase “being struck by illness”. It implies that illness comes out of the blue. Today, the
American Public has been educated and become more aware that behavior can influence the probability
of contracting some illnesses.
1. Agree or disagreed with the following statement and use specific examples to support your answer:
“Good Health is basically a matter of heredity or good luck. People cannot really do much to enhance
their health or pretend illness”.
2. Adele, age 24, was recently diagnosed with cancer. This form of cancer is treatable, requiring several
months’ worth of hospital treatments. She feels a great deal of stress from being diagnosed with a life-
threatening disease and managing her treatments along with her duties at work. Coping strategies
define how people deal with stress. In your opinion, what are several specific steps that Adele can take
to effectively manage her levels of distress throughout her course of treatment?
3. Adele’s doctor informs her of the existence of a new experimental drug on the market to treat her
disease. The experimental drug has not yet been FDA approved and is undergoing clinical trials with
human subjects. Her doctors inform her that she meets the eligibility requirements to enroll in the
clinical trial study. Based on your knowledge from this course, what potential ethical concerns should be
discussed with Adele before she agrees to sign up for the clinical trial study? Which types of behaviors
would be considered unethical in this scenario? (This refers to rights of participants in any research).”
