You decide to talk about perceptions vs. reality: In other words, how do people become
savvy media consumers and evaluate mediated messages?
In either a 10- 15-page paper bring up potential intercultural problems that could occur
between perceptions and reality. For example, does media coverage of events or people or issues
tend to focus on specific viewpoints? Is the medium the message? Is there a better way to frame
the event/person/issue? Cite specific examples to the affirmative or negative.

Focus on why there a need for media literacy. Be sure to take society, technology, history, ethical
concerns and commercial issues into account.
Some specific points you may want to bring up:
1. What is the role of media as businesses that need to make money?
2. How is the effectiveness of messages shaped by technological limitations of each
medium?
3. Why do governments seek to protect media, and why do revolutionaries seek to take
over media?
4. Is Western social influence through the media the same thing as cultural
imperialism?
